About
Girl Power In Scariff!
The East Clare Meet & Train group was set-up in September 2010. Our aim is to get women active in a fun and social way. Since then we have grown to a membership of over 40 women.
We meet 3 times a week, Mondays & Wednesday from 8 –9pm at the Rugby Grounds Scariff and a Saturday morning trek, which starts at 10am across various routes along the East Clare Way.
The group are specifically aimed at women of all ages and fitness levels to come run or walk with other women in a non-competitive basis, promoting the message that exercise can be fun and very social.
Our session involves a 10-15 minute warm up, followed by 30 minutes of continuous movement; here the group is split into 3 groups depending on their initial levels of fitness. Group 1 is for the walkers. Group 2 is for walkers that wish to progress to jogging and Group 3 is for those with greater levels of fitness that wish to train at a higher intensity. At the end we all regroup for a 10-minute gentle warm down and chat.
Since our startup the group have ran at various 5km & 10km races in all locations throughout Ireland, including the Dublin Womens City Marathon.
We also hosted a 5km series race on the 21st January in Scariff. It was a fantastic success, with over 100 runners and walkers who participated on the day.
We would like to thank the Scariff Rugby Association and Scariff Show Grounds for the use of their facility. To the Clare Sport Partnership for assisting our group. And to Sean and Cora O’Brien and Irish Seed Savers for allowing access through their land.
New members are very welcome to join us as we have an ongoing active beginners group.
