Scariff 10Km Run

Release: 7th Annual Scariff 10km Run\Walk to take place on Sunday 28th September at 2PM

New this year is addition of a 5km route!

Scariff Community Council, in association with Derg Credit Union & Clare Athletics Association will host the 7th Annual Scariff 10km Run\Walk on Sunday 28th September at 2 PM. All proceeds from this year’s event will go to two local & very worthy causes, Raheen Community Hospital & the development of the Community College Athletics track.

All runners and walkers are encouraged to come out on the day, enjoy the exercise, and support a very worthy cause. The route will appeal to runners of all levels, representing a stiff test to those seeking a challenge while also boasting the most stunning views of Lough Derg and the surrounding area.

The event has grown from strength to strength each year with ever increasing numbers taking part, attracting over 250 participants last year. Early registrations for this year are already promising to maintain that trend with the welcome addition of international competitors from both the UK & USA.

Last year, the organizers decided to reverse the route from previous years, primarily to remove the elongated climb from the early stages of the 10K course. The feedback from last year’s participants has been overwhelmingly positive confirming it to be the right decision.

The route starts in the centre of Scariff town and finishes close to the entrance of the GAA grounds where, as in previous years, participants will be welcomed with well earned refreshments. Showers and changing facilities will be available in the GAA hall. Cash prizes will be presented for first, second and third places in Male and Female categories for both the 5k & 10K

Registration for the event is great value at €15 per person for the 10K & only €10 for the 5K and can be completed online at www.runireland.com or through emailing scariff10K@hotmail.com. Forms can be picked up locally at O’ Meara’s Pharmacy or Rodgers Centra in Scariff. Late registration will be accepted on the day up to 1:30 PM at the GAA grounds

The event starts at 2 PM sharp so all entrants must be assembled by 1:45 PM at Market square in Scariff. Further details and information are available on www.runireland.com or by calling 087-9459412

Route:

Starting at the Market Square in Scariff Town Centre and heading out the Connaught road, the route swings right after passing Derg Credit Union. The first stage is a slightly undulating 2.5 KM stretch out the MountShannon Road. Around the mile mark, locally known as Ducey’s, make sure to look up for a great view of Holy Island. At 2.5 KM, turn left at Moynoe for a relatively flat 2 KM and the first (of two) water stations. The 5KM marker in Sheaun signals the start of the 250 meter climb over the next kilometer which is sure to separate the field. Approximately ¾ of the way up the climb, look out to the right for a spectacular vista of Lough Derg, surely an inspiration for the last 200 meters and to the second water station at 6KM. The reward for reaching the 6KM mark, apart from the water, is the next 3 KM are all downhill at a slope gentle enough to allow you firmly control your pace. For those looking to pick up some time, this provides a great opportunity to lengthen the stride over almost 1/3 of the 10K course. The last kilometer is a flat-run to the finish line at the GAA grounds where water & refreshments will be available.scariff 10kn run
